Timber vs Veneer Furniture

With so many furniture products on the market, it can be impossible to decide on a purchase. It’s important to know that not all ‘timber’ furniture is made from timber. Solid timber furniture is made entirely out of hardwood, while veneer or laminate timber furniture is made using a thin layer of hardwood that is glued to a cheaper or lower quality substrate, such as MDF or particleboard.

Solid timber furniture is considered to be of a higher quality than veneer timber furniture because it is more durable and long-lasting. It can be finished with high quality polyurethane which can allow the timber to last for decades. It can also be refinished and repaired relatively easily if scratched or dented. However, solid timber furniture tends to be more expensive than veneer furniture, due to the higher cost of the raw material and the labor required to produce it.

Veneer timber furniture is a more affordable option for those who want the look of hardwood without the high cost. It can be made to look like a wide variety of wood types and can be stained or painted to match any decor. This way a customer can still have the look of timber but for a fraction of the price. However, veneer furniture is less durable and may not last as long as solid timber furniture. It tends to scratch, scuff and dent more easily since it is made from soft wood and only a very thin piece of decor timber on top. Additionally, veneer furniture cannot be refinished as easily as solid timber furniture, and will often just need to be replaced if damaged.

Veneer furniture a great option for a tighter budget, however solid timber furniture is recommended as a long term investment. All of our furniture is made from solid messmate timber and coated with a high quality finish to give you a piece that will last a lifetime.
